Loudoun School for Advanced Studies: Stairwells
“Concrete Unexpected”
Loudoun School for Advanced Studies, Ashburn, VA
This spacious modern school was beautiful in every way except for its dark red concrete stairwells, void of personality and color. To match the feel of the school, uniquess needed to be added to these blank spaces! Working in collaboration with Art Club with guidance, students designed and painted three of the empty stairwells into amazing works of art. On the highest stairwell, a Senior Wall was created so that each graduating senior could paint a block as part of a tradition for years to come. In the last stairwell, Fun Places took a collection of doodles and creative designs and illustrations found left on white boards around the school over the year and included them all in one large “doodle” mural, which has 12 ports of touch-activated sounds that play when approperiate locations on the mural are touched. Technology + art! Now the stairwells are much more interesting and represent the school well!
